Journal:
I'm blessed to come from a long line of very creative women. My Great Grandma Mays and her daughter, my Nanny, did what they called "hand work". They knitted, crocheted, sewed, cooked, canned, etc. They created items as gifts and as usable items within the family. Nanny also played the piano beautifully. Then there is my paternal grandmother, I called her Mema. She never drove a car, and she was a 4'10" little spitfire. She ran an efficient home, and had the greenest thumb of anyone else I know. Her vegetable garden fed her family, and she was a wealth of knowledge about growing just about everything. She was also an excellent cook. She had a dream to someday write a cookbook. After her death, I discovered that she had a scrapbook of magazine and newspaper clippings of recipe ideas. She had other scrapbooks, too, including one dedicated to my dad's high school baseball accomplishments. My aunt Carole is an artist - she paints in all sort of mediums, but the most frequent are oils and watercolors. One of her paintings has been delivered by missionaries all over the world. It's titled "Search For Truth", and I recollect watching as a child as she painted it. Then there is my sweet Mama! She was a talented tole painter, and her creations are treasures to her children and grandchildren. Each of these women encouraged me, and their creative spirit lives on in me today. I am so grateful for the inspiration their lives provide me. A creative spirit is such a sweet gift from God! It allows me to escape when life gets difficult, to express joy, sadness, anger, fear along with other emotions that may be getting the best of me. I am grateful for the outlet!
