As some of you know, we bought 24 chicks on May 8 to raise for eggs - for our eating enjoyment and especially for sale. This is a learning device for our daughter - - - she helps me care for the pullets (female chicken under 1 year old) and is going to earn "egg money."
I've heard that a chicken makes a lot of noise when laying an egg, and that it's called, "The Egg Song." Hilarious. Well, this morning I heard lots of clucking and thought, "Is that the Egg Song?" I said to my Alannah, "I think one of the girls is laying an egg! Listen to the Egg Song." We listened for a few moments at the back door, then scurried to put on our chicken coop shoes. I said, "Let's get some scratch for them as a treat since they haven't had any all week." We got the scratch from the garage and the Song was still going strong. We opened the gate to the run and one of the Buff Orps flew out - - -she has a huge red comb and I knew I'd find an egg (red combs tell you that the bird has reached maturity). I checked in the new wood nesting box. Nope. Checked one of the antique galvanized nesting boxes. Nope. Checked the other antique box. YUP!! Alannah's eyes got HUGE. I don't know who was more excited. I ran for the camera and took some pics and she said, "Let's make breakfast!" She got a frying pan, sprayed it with Pam, cracked the egg and ate it within 5 minutes of us getting it from the box. We are going to make a scrapbook page today. She's been begging me to teach her to scrapbook.

That's cute that she wants to scrap a page about her first egg! And the pics of her with the egg are really cute!

What a GREAT memory! How special to save it by teaching her to scrap it herself too! I bet that egg was the best egg Alannah ever ate too.

I can just see Alannah's eyes when she saw the egg, and how funny it was eaten within five minutes. Talk about fresh eggs! What fun you all are having.

Gosh, that must have been so exciting! Alannah was tickled pink I see...I would have been too! She's learning...and she got a reward...lol! I can't imagine eating an egg right after it's been dropped. They must be so fresh! I mean they do sit at the grocery store...and there is a shelf life to them.
Oh and that LO is awesome!!! It was great seeing the pictures. P.S. Just think of when next Easter comes...you'll have lots of eggs to color!
