broken bones
 

i am feeling totally miserable. last sunday morning i slipped and fell on some tile in my house and broke my right wrist in two places - splinted right now and will see ortopod next monday to decide if i need surgery or just a cast.

this is so debillitating and frustrating!

I'm so sorry to hear your news. I'll be praying that you heal up real quick and that there will be a minimal amount of pain. ((Hugs))

So sorry to hear of your injury. It will take time to heal, so be patient and don't overdo it. Even a bad sprain can take months. Praying for your quick recovery.

Annette, I'm so sorry! I've never had a broken bone, but I do remember how awful it was to walk on a knee with a torn ligament and a piece of cartilage stuck in my kneecap. Blech. I can't imagine what a pain it is to only have the use of one hand.

is not good - the bones have moved and the ortho wants another evaluation next monday to see if i get pins. this is so frustrating but at least i have not run out of pin pills!

Oh my goodness, I feel for you. Four years ago, on the first day of the Christmas holiday I toppled over ice skating (I was actually been standing still at the time, not racing around) and pulvarised my wrist. Surgery, two plates and a SG$15,000 bill later I found life was liveable but not without some help - my 7 yr old daughter had to learn to do up my bra - I'm not sure who was more embarrassed, her or me! And chopping up tough round things like onions or potatoes was impossible - not the chopping bit but the holding down of the veg.

The upside to the metal work though, is that 4 yrs down the line, my bionic wrist is much stronger than the other one in terms of eg: carrying shopping bags. But I really recommend having some physio afterwards; my policy allowed me to have quite a lot and I have almost full movement back. My mother had a similar break with no follow up physio and has very much more limited use. The only thing I really can't do any more is my Queen of England wave - not that there's much call for that around here!!

and yes i will be having physio when the cast comes off. hopefully it will be off next week!

a quick update
 

I have now been castless for 5 weeks and have returned to 40 - 45% mobility in my right hand and wrist. Still painful and very frustrating but at least I can play a little with CS5.

The down side is that since I have been mousing/writing/dialling the phone etc with my left hand (because I can't with the right yet) I now have a problem with the tendons in my left thumb. They call it "trigger thumb" and according to my physical therapist at the least I will need a cortisone shot and at the worst a surgery and then more physical therapy.

The very good news is that whatever they do will not cost me a penny since I have met my deductible on my health insurance and I have decided to get a full physical work up done on everything to take advantage.
