Poutine? Never heard of it.
Can you buy milk in bags? No
Do you call them chocolate bars? Or candy bars? Candy bars
Do you say soda? Or pop? It's POP. But it's a regional thing. I'm from the midwest where everyone calls it pop. Here in New England it's soda or even tonic. Down south everything is Coke, even when they are asking for a Pepsi
Do you say toque? (I wore mine today because it is -22C with the windchill! BRR) Say what?
Sofa or couch? Couch. My grandma called it a davenport.
Do you know what a mickey or a 2-4 are? Nope.
Do you say purse or pocketbook or handbag?

LOL I say PURSE! :)
Poutine is SO YUMMY! I made Mags try it when she came to visit me! French fries with gravy and covered with melted mozzarella cheese. Sometimes people add other things to them, like peas and carrots for Irish poutine, or turkey and stuffing, etc....
I buy my milk in bags! (or cartons)
I say chocolate bar.
I say couch.
A toque is a hat.
I say pop.
A mickey is a small bottle of liquor and a 2-4 is a case of beer.

Can you buy milk in bags?No
Do you call them chocolate bars? Or candy bars? Candy Bars...in our house "chocolate" is only known as "Sees" because they make the BEST chocolate in the world and if you are gonna splurge you might as well splurge with the best!
Do you say soda? Or pop? Soda
Do you say toque? (I wore mine today because it is -22C with the windchill! BRR)...nope, in sunny San Diego we just always need to make sure we have our "shades" ;) :p :D :D
Sofa or couch? Sofa
Do you know what a mickey or a 2-4 are? Way back in the day a "mickey" was NOT a good thing! It was when somebody would slip a narcotic into an unsuspecting person's drink.

oh...and I'm always forgetting where I put my "purse"

Our mickey is much nicer. ;)
Stacey, do you say purse???
Stacey Jewell Stahl
02-02-2010, 08:19 PM
I do say purse. It seems like "pocketbook" is a New England thing for ladies over 50.
I have some funnies: my grandpa used to call his red bandanna in his overalls his "snot rag."   Those silly farmers.
When I was little my grandma used to say, "Do you have to go toiley?" instead of "Do you have to go to the bathroom?"
Which leads me to this: do you say restroom, bathroom, toilet room, powder room? I say bathroom.

I am sincerely surprised that you don't have a regular spot for your purse! I thought I was the only one who left it where ever and then had to do a search and rescue when I needed it.

Oh, it isn't just my purse!! It is the keys...my glasses....my Bible....MY HEAD!!!! ;) :p :D :D :D :D Mario teases me and says it is one of my most "endearing" qualities....I just walk into a room and start dropping my belongings and "pieces of me" where ever whim takes me. ;) :p :D :D
We have "bathrooms" and Mario too has a "snot rag!" When the boys were little their pacifier was a "dee" (I have NO idea why?!!) and when my baby brother was little he used to call kisses "minkos" and salad was called "turtle num num" because my grandma had a desert turtle that they rescued and we used to feed it lettuce. Yes, we are weird....but lovable all the same. :) :) :)

oh....and we have some fun family words from my hubbies Italian heritage too. Most of these are dialect and I'm sure I'm spelling them wrong but here goes....
knick knacks and little things that make something more pretty (like parsley on a plate, flower petals floating in the pool, etc.) are called "bella vi day." So when one of my boys look at a layout and ask why I put an element in an "odd" place to their eyes I might reply, "oh, you know, it is just for bella vi day!"
A left-over that is too small to save but seems like too much to throw out is called "meduno" which happens to be the dialect name for the tiny town in Italy where my hubby's family came from originally. So when we are clearing the table you will inevitably hear, "SOMEBODY has to finish this, its just meduno!"

No clue what a poutine is...
No milk in bags that I've ever seen anywhere in the states.
Candy bars unless its pure chocolate then we might say chocolate bar...but usually always candy bar.
We call everything coke, even if its not a Coke product, is a southing thang :)
I don't know what a toque is either??? Coat?
We say couch, rarely a sofa, may be another southern thing...not sure.
To me a mickey is a drug you get slipped in your drink for sinister purposes, and 2-4 is counting by 2s :) LOL...
Answers may vary because different regions of the country have different customs.
Hope that helps!

Can you buy milk in bags? Not now, but we did when I was a kid in California - actually it was a bag inside a box with a spout.
Do you call them chocolate bars? Or candy bars? Both. If I want JUST chocolate, it's a chocolate bar.
Do you say soda? Or pop? Soda, but my boys say pop or soda pop
Do you say toque? (I wore mine today because it is -22C with the windchill! BRR) No
Sofa or couch? Both
Do you know what a mickey or a 2-4 are? Taking the mickey out of someone is sort of like deflating their over-sized ego and a 2-4 is that a twofer - 2 for the price of one?
I say purse - and mine gets lost too, ladies, along with the keys, the cat...

I lose my purse and glasses DAILY! Mostly my glasses though. I take them off whenever I do anything... which doesnt really make sense. Can you buy milk in bags? No, we get ours in 1/2 gallon cardboard cartons or 1 gallon plastic jugs
Do you call them chocolate bars? Or candy bars? Either, interchangeably
Do you say soda? Or pop? Soda or Coke (and you can imagine the confusion this causes when working in a concession stand or restaurant)
Do you say toque? maybe...only because of our Canadian friends and family...but we only use it to refer to a toboggan or stocking cap kind of hat, my winter hat isn't a toque, but my husband has one.....and I would have spelled it "tuke" before today
Sofa or couch? Either
Do you know what a mickey or a 2-4 are? I agree that mickey is something that gets slipped into your drink, but in our house it typically applies to a large mouse and 2-4 could be an expression of how long you might be in jail.
I say purse and it is probably in the trunk of the car where I seem to store it
we say bathroom or restroom if trying to be polite
and steps if there are only 2 or 3, stairs if there are a lot
porch if it is small, a patio is bigger than a porch if it is made of concrete and deck if it is made of wood....never heard bridge used this way
and plastic or fabric bags, paper sacks
And I may live in Texas, but we say you, not ya'll, not you all, not you guys so much (but occasionally) and certainly not yous or yous guys (which my friends in NJ did use regularly)

We usually buy it in 1 gallon plastic containers (jugs)

Do you call them chocolate bars? Or candy bars?
Candy Bars...unless it is a Herseys bar!!!
Do you say soda? Or pop?
Coke ... even for Pepsi... when you go to a fast food place and they carry Pepsi products and you ask for a Coke they will say, is Pepsi ok!!! If it is other than a cola product I call it soda, ie orange soda, grape soda etc.

Do you know what a mickey or a 2-4 are? Not before explained,

"you slip someone a Mickey to take advantage of them".
We have six packs and Cases (beer or coke/pepsi/soda)
Purse or Handbag?
Purse, which is always missing, cause I put it somewhere and then lay something on top of it like my coat. my keys I have started clipping to the outside of my purse, if they aren't there I go check the lock of the front door :O

"Yous guys" in not a Jersey thing - - - I heard it back in Michigan, but it was rare. "You guys" is big everywhere I have lived. Reminds me of "The Electric Company" - - - HEY, YOU GUYS!!!!
I do have to say I have a pet peeve about the word the letter T, specifically when pronouncing the word "important." After so many years of choir, I have been trained to enunciate. It's "im-por-tant." Not "im-por-dint." I've heard news anchors say this as well as little kids and lots of people in between. I get teased a lot for saying water, not wahder. I have a friend, Anita, and everyone calls her Anida.
Sometimes I think kids can't spell because people's diction is so bad. With Alannah and her friends doing spelling each week, I see the trouble they have spelling words that have a T but almost everyone pronounces with a D.

Yeah, my area is really bad for that Stacey. You dont really understand how bad it is though, until you listen to a Cape Bretoner doing the hockey play by plays on the radio. It hurts to listen.... lol I know I am just as guilty because it took me forever to convince Connor that water was spelled with a t and not a d.

Milk in bags-- We CAN at our regional convience store (1/2 gal bag of orange juice, or any kind of milk) - however I don't but I should it is a lot cheaper.
Chocolate bars if they are mostly chocolate candy bars otherwise or just plain candy?
Soda definately! I don't mind soda in the can but prefer fountain drinks...LOL
Toque? didn't know what that was but my DH calls them "beanies" I just call them hats
we have couches -- sofas are MUCH nicer than my couches (it was always a formality thing)
a mickey is a drug...
cases of beer or soda
Purse
at home I go to the bathroom, in public I go to the restroom (I know I am strange)
bags
bucket or pail?
speaking of formality defining words... we had a living room where the nice furniture was and guests were welcomed and a famiy room where the tv was and the everyday furniture was.... (and they were right next to each other)

I know a lady who has a "formal sitting area" and then a tv room. When we were kids, we were NEVER allowed in her formal area, now that we are adults, she welcomes us in but I still feel uncomfortable. lol
