In the October issue of the Artisan Notebook we feature as our Hot Trend layouts that use an over-sized photo blended with a background in combination with un-blended photos and 3-dimensional elements. For those that might be new to the idea of using blend modes Debb Cozzi provides this quick tutorial:

The tutorial screen shots use PSCS3 but can easily be adapted to any photo editing program that uses layers and blend modes. The kit used for this layout is the October Guild kit, “Treasured Traditions” which is available with guild membership.

1) Open a background (I used Paper 5 from the Treasured Traditions kit). Duplicate the image (Image>Duplicate) and close the original background file.

2) Open a photo of choice. Duplicate image (Image>Duplicate) and close the original file.

3) Use the move tool to click and drag the photo on top of the background file. Hold the ctrl button down and use the move tool to click a corner of the photo and drag the photo so that it is the same size as the background. Set the blend mode of the photo layer to Color Burn (I reduced the opacity to 68% you may want to adjust this depending on the photo and the background you use.)

4) Duplicate the photo layer (right click photo layer & click duplicate layer)

5) Set blend mode on second photo layer to Soft Light (I reduced the opacity to 29% you may want to adjust this depending on the photo and the background you use.)

6) Open the leaf element file (StampedVineWLeaves) Use the move tool to click and drag the element on top of the second photo layer. Duplicate as needed and place where wanted. Set the blend mode of each leaf layer to multiply (I reduced the opacity to 69% you may want to adjust this depending on personal preference.)

7) Add un-blended photos, frames and other 3-dimensional elements as a cluster to create a focal point. Be sure to add drop shadows to these elements to give them a realistic look. Add journaling, word-art or title as desired.

Blend modes can add a wealth of interest and depth to your photos. Experiment with various photos and backgrounds for an unlimited variety of different looks and artistic expression.

Beautiful blended page deconstruction that will enable me to create the type of artsy page that I love. Hopefully, I can get the notebook subscription for this month. Thank you for this clear and precise tutorial. Love that you duplicated the photos and then used blending modes. Exactly what I have been looking for. Blessed holiday season. ;)
