Signs that Point the Way: Travel Photo Tips
In the June 2011 issue of the Artisan Notebook we are taking an in-depth look at creating layouts that celebrate our travel and vacations. Here with a web-exclusive photo tip are the editors of the Artisan Notebook:
When we are at home we probably take most signs for granted, barely noticing them. But when you travel spotting interesting signs is great fun; you can use them as a running theme in a travel journal. Photos of signs can identify locales, mark progress, provide information, or even just make people laugh.
Keep an eye out for humorous signs, especially when it is unintended and comes from juxtaposition or odd coincidence.
Familiar-looking signs in other languages, such as a French stop sign saying ARRET, are also attention grabbers. If you’re traveling in a place where languages change frequently, as in Europe, try building a collection of similar signs in several languages.

Signs are also useful in that they can help to mark the progress of your travels. Look for signs that announce where you are; city limits, unusual town names, or driving distances. Signs that recall trip highlights, such as hotel banners or names of famous museums are helpful to the story telling that will take place in your scrapbook layouts. Photographing historical markers is a good way to remember details of a historic place or event.
Commemorative placards can be used at a later date to create word art, titles or journal prompts for future layouts about your travel.
So, when you are photographing your journeys don’t forget to look for the signs! Do you have some fun or interesting photos of signs that you have taken during your travels. We invite you to share them by posting in the Guild gallery.
