Featured Layouts Using June Guild Kit, “A Room With A View”
This month we are turning our attention to the idea of scrapping our travel and vacation layouts. The June Guild kit is a perfect complement to that layout theme. Here are just a few of the layouts that have been created using this wonderful kit:
The softly textured, neutral colored backgrounds of the June kit make them a perfect tool for creating blended-style layouts. Because Debb is a photographer before she is a scrap-booker creating this style of layout that makes a photo the background canvas of the layout is one of her most favorite and frequently used techniques. This is an older set of photos taken on one of Debb’s many summer trips to Lake Tahoe. The hot air balloon elements that are part of this kit allowed her to create a fun trompe l’oeil effect.
To create this layout Debb first opened one of the backgrounds in the June kit. She then dragged her main photo on top of that background and enlarged the photo so that it was the same size as the background. She duplicated the photo layer two more times and sent the blend modes for each layer of the photo as follows: photo 1/layer 2: color burn, photo 2/layer 3: soft light, photo 3/ layer 4: screen at 40% opacity.
Debb shares, “I’ve always been a fan of photos “taken from behind.” It gives the viewer the opportunity of seemingly entering into the scene by viewing the vista from the perspective of the people in the photo. These types of photos are especially effective when the view that stretches before you is one as beautiful as that of Lake Tahoe and her azure-hued slopes. This particular photo is one of my husband and my youngest son taken several years ago on one of our many ‘Tahoe hikes.’
To create the layout I first used some Photoshop brushes to create a clipping mask to use with my photo. If you purchase the June 2011 Artisan Notebook a link for this photo mask is provided as a FREE gift. Using the mask I clipped the photo and merged it with the mask. I then duplicated the clipped photo and used different blending modes on the two layers of photos. The first layer of the photo I set to the “multiply” blending mode. The second layer of the photo I set to screen with a 22% opacity.”
The story behind this layout:
Several years ago my husband worked for a company that required he be on the road frequently to visit his clients. As often as we could the boys and I would accompany him and take the opportunity to visit some of the amazing places found in the Southwest United States. On one of those trips we had the opportunity to visit Zion National Park.
Located in Southwestern Utah, Zion National Park encompasses some of the most scenic canyon country in the United States. The park is characterized by high plateaus, a maze of narrow, deep sandstone canyons and striking rock towers and mesas. There is a bus tour that takes you through the canyon and stops at various trail heads. On our visit we spent the day exploring several of those trails and took in all the surrounding beauty. At the time of this visit I only had a small, first generation digital camera. I long to revisit this special place now the my photographic equipment is of a higher quality. Still, I do love the memories these photos elicit.
We hope these layouts give you ideas and inspire you to scrap your travel and vacation photos. If you are not already a Guild Member we invite you to consider joining today so that you too can use this wonderful kit to scrap your special travel memories!
